Alcorn's Siblings
This page is dedicated to the siblings of Rev. James Alexander Alcorn
More info coming soon...
According to the 1870 US Federal Census, Alcorn's family are living in Marshall County, Range 3 likely on the Western outskirts of Holly Springs, MS just a few weeks before he will be born in September 1870. In the 1880 US Federal Census and the 1885 Tate County list of Educable Children they are living in Independence, Tate County Mississippi.

I will be adding more information about all of his siblings, but there is some basic information below:
-
Washington took on the last name Phillips and he married Velvet Walls on December 5, 1878 in Tate County, Mississippi.
-
In 1880 when he was 24 years old, he was also living in Independence, Tate Co., Mississippi with wife Velvet (19) and daughter Loula (1). His last name is now Phillips.
-
Washington died some time before 1920, likely in Tate County, MS.
-

-
Moses disappears after the 1870 Census and I have not been able to find anything about him

-
Hellen married Lewis House in January 28, 1881 in Tate County, MS.
-
They had five children: Lucius, Tom, Porter, Ella, and Mary Eva.
-
Hellen died sometime before 1892.
-

-
Charles was Alcorn's last sibling to be born during slavery (1863).
-
On July 26, 1891 he married Irena Wheeler in Desoto County, MS.
-
Charles and Irena had one son named Adron Howze who was born May 1, 1892.
-
Around January 1898 when his son Adron was almost 6 years old, Charley left him and Irena in Tate County, MS. I believe he and Alcorn went to Texas at this time to look for work with the railroad.
-
In 1900, Charley is living in Shelby County, TN working a railroad job.
-
In 1901, Charley marries a woman named Indiana in Shelby County, TN.
- In 1910 and 1920, Charley and Indiana are living in Shelby County, TN
- Indiana Howze dies in 1921 and is buried at St. James CME church in Collierville, TN.
- In 1922, Charley's son Adron marries a woman named Irma Collier and they have a daughter the next year named Dorothy Howze. Sadly, Irma died while 2 months pregnant with their second child in 1925. He marries a woman named Susie Belt in 1932 in Shelby County, TN.
- Charley dies in 1934 and is buried at St. James CME church in Collierville, TN--the church and cemetery at the heart of Alcorn Village Subdivision today.
- Charley's son Adron and his second wife Susie Belt Howze both die due to a fire in their apartment in Memphis, TN.
-

- Sarah who was born in 1868, marries William "Nute" Crawford on September 26, 1889 in Tate County, MS.
- Sarah and "Nute" have four children together: William Nute Craword, Jr., Evie Crawford, Freddie Crawford, and Alcorn Crawford.
- Sarah died sometime around 1898

- Alcorn Howze is born September 10, 1870

- Henry Ann was born in 1872 and she married Alex Malone on December 26, 1896 in Tate Co., MS.
- Henry Ann and Alex Malone had 5 children: Alex Malone, Jr., Estelle Virginia Malone, George Washington Malone, Ruthetta Malone, and Clarrence Malone.
- In the early 1900s, Henry Ann and Alex Malone moved to Proctor Arkansas where she lived until her death around 1936.

- Mary Elizabeth was the last child born to Nathan and Arella Howze around 1885. The missing/destroyed 1890 US Census records have made it hard to find out much about her early life. My working theory now is that Nathan died around 1895 and that Arella married a man named Dave Walls in Tate County, MS soon after that while Mary was still living at home and the others had moved away.
- If my theory is correct then, Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" Walls was living with her mother Arella and step-father Dave Walls in Tate County, MS next door to her oldest brother Washington Phillips and his family.
- In 1906, I believe Mary E. Howze married Anninias McKinney and they are living in Tate County, MS in 1910 with a newborn daughter named Lillian McKinney.
- In 1920, Mary Howze McKinney is listed as a widowed woman and there is no child with her where she is living in Memphis, TN. She is back in Tate County, MS in 1930.
- By the time the 1940s US census was recorded, Mary was living in Collierville, TN with her husband Thomas Hayes. Thomas died in 1946.
- In 1950 she is still in Collierville and living with a special friend named Morris Thomas
- Mary died on April 17, 1950 and is buried at St. James CME church in Collierville, TN--the church and cemetery at the heart of Alcorn Village Subdivision. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find a marker there.
